Would you rather that the guestbook stores the posters IP or resolves their IP to store the Hostname. Their IP would be something like 62.38.99.213 whilst the resolved hostname (which is what it does now) looks like pcp02453pcs.athens01.tn.comcast.net. I'm tempted to just let it store the IP in 2.3.2 as it uses less resources and makes it easier for people to ban IP's.

I voted for IP since I don't think you need to go any further.
If you ban an IP they're banned right?
Well admittedly if their ISP is like AOL (bleh) then they'll be unbanned
at some point. But even if you ban a resolved IP won't that be the same
or is there a difference?

Yes it would be the same but a lot of people don't know how to get the IP from a hostname. Some have the IP in the hostname but not all.

As I stated an IP can be anything from IP217-32-63-24btcentral.com to pcp02453pcs.athens01.tn.comcast.net. http://www.carbonize.co.uk/guestbook24/ will give you a better idea. I have just told it to show the hostnames.

There are services which can resolve hostnames easily -- such as a free SPAMCOP account. But I still prefer the IP addresses.
Might it be possible to allow primary IP addresses on the banned list? For example 80. (I chose that at random...it is not one I have a problem with. I have a guestbook with a high level of SPAM -- even with the image verification mod (but not NEARLY so many as before it.) Most of the SPAM posts are from countries which would not normally visit my site or find it useful. Therefor banning entire blocks where the SPAM is most common could be useful. At this point, however, an IP address will not be accepted on the banned list unless it has at least two sections...for example 80.125.

According to the guestbook docs you can ban an IP block by just using 80
if you have an IP ban on 243.21., someone signing who has an IP of 243.21.3.44 will not be able to sign

Hmmm...it won't accept it for me. If I enter the list reading:
69.31.
70.178.
80
80.
80.13.
80.132.
(with and without the following period just to check)
when it loads again it simply shows:
69.31.
70.178.
80.13.
80.132.
Nothing less than two portions of the IP address have ever been accepted for me.

It always LOGS the hostname but only displays it on the guestbook if you tell it to. You can see the Hostname when you look in the posts in Admin.

While there are certain times that I do want the host name, the guestbook is not one of them.
Thanks!

Think I will put the option to resolve IP's or not into the config file as it only affects posts made after you set the option. I would say it's a set and forget option as you want one or the other and are not really going to switch between them.
