Hi, I'm new to this Guestbook program. I just installed AG 2.3.1 via my hosts cPanel. It seems to have installed fine.

I was wondering if any documentation is available. I searched this forum, but only found a few old post asking for documentation.

I have a few customization questions and a problem with the email notification feature.

Thank you!

Thanks Carbonize! Are you the developer? I see your name all over answering questions.

2 Questions:

1. The email notification function works for the webmaster address, but not to the guest. I have it checked in "General Settings" > "Email Options" > "send email to guest".

2. Which template contains the text at the top of the main guestbook page > "Thank you for stopping by my site. Here you can leave your mark.". I want to modify that and I haven't found it yet.

Thanks in advance!

No i am not the developer. As to your questions.

1 - Dunno, so long as they are leavng an email address they should receive notification.

2 - Look in lang/english.php. Most messages are stored i nthere and can be altered.

Hi Carbonize,

I hope you are still monitoring this thread.

Question: I found the lang/english.php file and it does contain the messages I want to change. However, I'm totally new to php and I tried to edit that file and whenever I do, it corrupts the file and breaks all the image paths and messages inserts too. This really breaks the guestbook's looks!

I just uninstalled the guestbook and reinstalled (it was blank except for tests) and all is fine. I tried to edit the file on the server, this time (after backing up the file), it broke it again. I was able to restore the backup file and all is OK.

I am trying to find out the correct way to edit php files, but so far I haven't found any special handling instructions.

I have tried to edit in Windows Notepad and UltraEdit32 (file downloaded via WS_FTP Pro in Passive Mode) and to edit on the server via the WS_FTP "Edit" feature which utilizes Notebook.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You are aware that Ultraedit has a built in FTP client? Personally I prefer PS Pad which is a FREE Ultraedit clone but with, in my opinion anyway, a better built in FTP client. You say the file is getting corrupted? Can you elaborate. Are you getting any error messages?

Thanks for your prompt reply.

When I say corrupted, I mean the resulting changes to the guestbook look wrong. For instance, all the image paths lose the base URL and look something like (from memory) http://img/whatever_name.gif. Also the inserted message text disappears after I edited on the server.

Isn't a php file just a text file and can be treated as such?

If you want, I can "break" the guestbook again and let you look at it.

Thanks!

That would probably be the best idea. That and post the changes you made to english.php. Yes a PHP file is just a text file. You can even email your english.php file to me as this is obviously the problem. As to the images edit the base_url part in the admin/config.inc.php file.

Hi Carbonize.

I downloaded and installed PSPad and it's great. I edited the lang/english.php file via the ftp function and it worked great! Maybe it was a problem with WS_FTP or the other editors. When I first opened the file in UltraEdit, it asked me if I wanted to convert the non=DOS file to DOS and I said no.

As far as the image path is concerned, it changes (loses the base URL) whenever I edited just the english.php file. It's OK now after the PSPad edit.

If you want to see the corrupted file, I saved it and can send it to you (at your hotmail address?). Let me know if you want to see it.

Thank you again for all your help!!

PS. re: my previous email guest notification problem, it turns out to only be a problem when I use an email address hosted at the same hosting company (different domain). I can send email direct from the guestbook (domain) host to the other commonly hosted domains with no problem, but when I send via the guestbook email guest notification script, it disappears (no bounce). The hosting company is trying to figure this one out now.

Thanks again!!

Glad it's all sorted out now. Hope you didn't pay for Ultraedit.

Thanks again Carbonize! No I hadn't paid for UltraEdit, it was a gift.

I have run into another problem.

When I insert an image into my guestbook post and try to preview it, I get this error message:
Warning: copy(/home/usatro2/public_html/guestbook/tmp/img-1107116473.gif): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/usatro2/public_html/guestbook/lib/add.class.php on line

The first time I got this error, I backed out of the preview screen, re-entered the image file path (it was blank after returning) and submitted and the post was fine.

I tried a second time and when I previewed, I got a similar error message (different file name), but then I submitted from the preview screen and got an errror screen that redirected back to the guestbook and the post was there, but the image wasn't (no even a missing image graphic).

Here is a link to the error screen link > screenshot.

Any ideas?

Thanks again!

<edit later>PS. Is there a way to increase the size of the email the guest is sent. It appears to be limited to about 144 characters.</edit later>
