advanced poll background color change

I have v2.03 installed and it works great. I am trying to change the background color of the poll. I have successfully changed the color of the header and most of the background using the admin control panel.
However the poll section of the template stays the default white. It seems like there is a $pollvars variable for this....
Where can this be edited?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, this will change the background color of the poll, BUT the entire center section of the poll(the poll options + buttons) remains white.
This leads me to believe that the template and the poll code are separate.
Am I correct on this?

Maybe you need to check your permissions. Several directories need to be chmod 777 or 666.
