How can I tirm the old messages from the guestbook?

You would have to delete them one at a time via the admin panel or go into phpMyAdmin. Why would you want to though?

The guestbook seems to get used more as a forum than a true guestbook. I want to reduce the size of the database.

Is there a utility available to help with this?

Not at present. I'm sure I could throw something together if it's that important. You may consider installing a forum as well though lol.

I have considered installing a forum. I haven't found one that is small and tight like the guestbook. What I have found are these huge monster programs that have way too many bells and whistles.

http://phorum.org/ seems to be a small forum. I personally use phpBB the same as this forum.

Talk about plain jane and boring http://phorum.org/ is it. Ill stick with phpbb.

Yes but simple is good. I found out about Phorum as it is used by http://pspad.com. It is apparently easy to integrate.
