Call to a member function on a non-object

I installed the textfile version of Advanced Poll 2.02 and have been able to successfully use the admin panel, however, when I add the code to my blog page I get the following error:

Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /srv/www/htdocs/Vinnysview2/index.php on line 140

lines 139-140 of my index.php page are:

include_once "http://my.IP.address/Vinnysview2/pollphp/textfile/booth.php";

echo $php_poll->poll_process(4);

What am I missing here? I've searched through this forum and see that others have experienced this same problem, but they just mention that they figured it out without posting the fix

I have had problems using the local path (/srv/www/htdocs/something) with other software. In particular, with Moveable Type. So by default I usually specify the entire URL including http://

Now I can finally start posting some polls on my site.
