I just installed Advanced Guestbook 2.3.3. through an automatic script provided by my hosting service. I would realy, really like to upgrade to 2.4.1 so I dont get flooded with spammers. Can anybody tell me where I can find instructions on how to update from 2.3.3. to 2.4.1
Thanks.

Download 2.4.1. Copy the database information from your current config.inc.php file to the one in 2.4.1 then upload 2.4.1. Once uploaded goto www.yoursite.com/guestbook/misc/update_db.php to update the database.
Job Done.

Thanks for the info but I ran into a problem. Here's what I did - I downloaded 2.4.1 and saved it into a directory called GB. I then opened up my FTP program and went to version 2.3.3. guestbook on my server. I went to the admin directory on my server and copied the config.inc.php file down to my hard drive into the admin directory of 2.4.1 where it overwrote the original config.inc.php file.

I then uploaded all the files in 2.4.1 to my server where it replaced the 2.3.3 files.

I then opened my browser and went to www.mywebsite.com/misc/update_db.php and I got the following error message:

"Please update config.inc.php first."

I thought I did update it by replacing the original version in 2.4.1. with the version I had in 2.3.3

Not sure what to do now. Any suggestions?

Update your config file not Replace. You are just supposed to copy the database information from the old one into the new one.

I saw your post and was also running the same version from an automatic script on my host. I followed the instructions and successfully upgraded, too.

What benefit is there for spam prevention? Nothing appears to have changed ..

Thanks,

Image verification has been added to the script. It randomly generates a graphic with 4 or 5 letters and/or numbers on it. Before you can post a new message to the guestbook, you are asked to enter those 4 or 5 numbers in a box. If your numbers match the graphic, then your message gets posted.

Spam bots that scrounge around the internet looking for guestbooks to invade are unable to read the graphic and thus unable to "verify" the numbers therefore they are denied permission to access the guestbook. So far it has worked effectively for me. Of course if a human spammer wants to attack your website, then he can enter the correct image verification ... but I dont think there are too many human spammers out there going from guestbook to guestbook.

You could get it to work with IE5 Mac I suppose, but there is little point since MS don't update that browser any more and is hardly used if at all. I guess Apple leave it on there machines (well, mine had it preinstalled) just to show how inferior it is to Safari. The other Mac browser/s you should check are Safari, Opera, FireFox, Mozilla, Camino (the last 3 are all by the Mozilla project!), Netscape and Konquerer if its still around. I think that about covers it really.
