guestbook spam

I have been using the Advanced Guestbook 2.3.1 for many months now. I have it set up on several sites I webmaster. I find some "people" will post the same message in all the books, usually something like 'great site'. They post with the sole purpose of advertising their "business" website which is usually in a different language.

The worst are people who leave their porn site and add a javascript in the post to automatically direct you to that site when the guestbook is viewed. Even trying to delete the post in admin will not work unless javascript is turned off in the browser.

I thought I would post here and see if anyone else has received guestbook spam like this? My list of blocked IP's is getting bigger and bigger

Deb

We had the same problem - though I don't think at quite the same level as you. We only had a total of 5 or so. I was able to just block their ip addresses and the problem went away. We never had the javascript problem with ours either - they would just post their site info. Good luck (I know this doesn't "help" - but just wanted you to know you weren't alone! )

Hi 39 Reasons....thanks for replying It's been quite calm in my guestbooks for a few days now. Every once in awhile someone makes the rounds through the guestbooks and I follow behind and delete entries

I'm beginning to think these people search out Advanced Guestbooks just to do this sort of 'spamming'. I've seen the same posts in other guestbooks that I don't even own. When I used the Bravenet.com guestbook *shudder*, this sort of posting never occured that I found. It's good to hear from others too about all this as well

Hi JTD....disabling html would probably work so javascript coding couldn't be added to a post. I like having html enabled so visitors can leave their banners and logos. Fortunately it has only happened twice now that my guestbook was taken over by porn, and that I caught it very quickly BTW....your fudge looks sooooooo yummy!

Deb

Hi JTD,

Thanks for the link to info about the robots.txt file. I've read it and it seems simple enough but I'm new to all this stuff and wanted to make sure first...

If I create the following robots.txt file...

User-agent: *
Disallow: /gbook

...am I right in thinking this will block all robots from just my guestbook directory (my guestbook directory is called gbook). And also, I'm assuming this would be placed in the root directory.

Is it possible to add robots.txt files to a sub-directory. E.g. if I added...

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

...to the /gbook directory would this also work?

Many thanks for any advice you can give and apologies if this is a bit basic.

Regards,

Trevor

Excellent idea JTD to use the robots.txt file! Thanks I was thinking they must be using something to do this too, but never thought to use the robots.txt file.

I would use a trailing slash so the bots are blocked from the whole gbook directory.

User-agent: *
Disallow: /gbook/

I use the robots.txt file to block google from indexing my images. I have it in the main directory, public_html. I don't know if putting the robots.txt into a subdirectory would work or not.
I do have an image verification mod for the guestbook to stop spam but I never got round to installing it. So I came up with a simple quick fix. I assume they are using a program or script to send the data straight to the addentry page. Simply add the following to the start of the addentry.php code before everything else.
<?php
$url = getenv('HTTP_REFERER');
$url = parse_url($url);
$domain = strtolower($url['host']);
if (($domain != 'www.carbonize.co.uk') && ($domain != 'carbonize.co.uk')) Header('Location: http://www.carbonize.co.uk/');
?>

Changing the carbonize.co.uk to the domain of your site. The Location part is the page they get sent to if they didn't get to the addentry page from your site.

Ok I've overhauled the image verification script. It now takes them back to the addentry form with an error message at the top if they get the code wrong. I have also rewrote the instructions to make then clearer, I hope, and included iinstructions for people using 2.2. Finally I have also changed how it appears in the form so it makes more sense to the user.

You can get it from http://www.carbonize.co.uk/verification.zip

I've been using the robots.txt for almost 3 weeks now to try to block the bots from my guestbook folder. I've had a few known spammers post since then. I'm not clear on how bots actually work though. Are they sent out to just post once? or does the bot return with info where the books are and sent to post again and again?

I just got back from a week away, so I hope to give your script a try over the next day or two.
There is a problem with the image verification mod in guestbook 2.2 but I am working on it.

As for PHP includes I'll give a quick explanation.

The PHP function include() is used to add the contents of one file into the current file. For example <?php include("data.txt"); ?> would add the content of data.txt into the output of the current file at the point the code is at.

I'll simplify further. Every page on my site is actually made up for three seperate files, a header, the content and a footer. Every page uses the include code to add the header file to the start of the content and the footer file to the end of it. This makes updating navigation and the like easy as it's only a single file. The layout of a page is like this:
<?php include('/mnt/htdocs/carboniz/html/header.txt'); ?>
Page content goes here
<?php include('/mnt/htdocs/carboniz/html/footer.txt'); ?>
You then save the file with the .php extension and when the page is requested your server passes the page to PHP which then sends the file but with the content of header.txt at the start of the file and footer.txt's contents the end.

The reason for all the /mnt/htdocs is because my pages are spread over several directories (folders) and so I use the absolute path for the file names.

Yes there was another site that only displayed 7 characters but if it still works then let it be, simply change the message about entering the 8 characters.

As to using an image for the background you will find the head section and I believe the <BODY> tag in the templates/header.php file. You can either use the background="image.gif" attibute in the body tag or add
body { background: #FFFFFF url(image.gif); }
in the style section.

Also, having just browsed your site, I would say that you could easily integrate the guestbook into your current site design. As your site uses the same banner and menu on every page you could make them a single file and have every page call that file using the include function of PHP. Same for the copyright at the bottom. Only having a single file for the menu and banner means it is easier to update as and when necessary. I have given brief instructions elsewhere in this forum and I am in the process of writing a tutorial on it for my site.

Carbonize, the same thing happened on another site I visited today. The site I mentioned uses frames. When I got the error I was outside of the frames. A few hours later I went back to that site and had no problem when the frames were loaded.
