I know you can change the colour of the background but I would like to change the background to maybe a transparency or a picture is this posible.

Open up header.php in your templates folder.

Search for <style type="text/css">

Underneath <style type="text/css"> add the following:

Change url("../images/your image file.jpg") to the correct folder
