Hi Proxy2.de Members and Guests,
I've been getting a lot of hate posts in my guest book. Is there a way to make all messages come to me via email and require my authentication before they appear on the guest book?
Sincerely,
Jason

Short of modding the scripts no. Best thing to do is report them to their ISP which gets stored with the post. I've been reporting people trying to hack my guestbook to their ISPs and getting some encouraging replies from the relevant ISP's.

Hackers are a widespread problem on guestbooks these days. Lists of guestbooks with posting URLs circulate among spammers, particularly in Europe.
Using the IP Number Ban List in the General Settings part of admin can help a lot. I have found that you have to have at least two sections to an IP number when you add it (12. won't work, but 12.36. will).
If you can't determine the IP number from the captured IP address for a visitor, a free account at SpamCop (spamcop.net) will let you enter the address and interpret it for you.
However, what I WOULD REALLY LIKE (I can dream, can't I?) is for visual confirmation authorization to be added to the guestbook posting process. That is, where a graphical key is shown that you need to type into an authentication box in order to post. Bots can't do it.
This is available in the bulletin board script I use (phpBB) and is great!

There is. www.carbonize.co.uk/verification.zip is the mod for adding image verification to the entry form. If that doesn't work properly for you (some guestbooks installed on things lke PHPNuke mess up) there is an alternate way of stopping automated postings I am working on. It's simply changing the name of the Name input. The automated posters just send the info straight to your guestboo but if you change the name of the Name input the script will treat the automated post as a post with no name and not add it. Should only require the editing of two files.
