Is it possible to disable private message for the guest book. My guests are confused it seems and some have checked this box.

might be heavy handed but if you go to templates/form.php
find and remove:

<input type="checkbox" name="gb_private" value="1">
<font size="1" face="$VARS[font_face]">$LANG[FormPriv]</font>

The visitor won't see it any more

Not heavy handed. Thats the only way you can remove the option in Advanced Guestbook.
