I have tried to change the templates but they return back to original template "default" which does not show a vote button. Is this something I need to change manually?

I am seeing a vote button, so maybe you resolved this.

Anyway, perhaps take a look at the demos: http://proxy2.de/poll/index.php

It looks like when they use anything other than the default template, the template is specified using "set_template_set":
