I guess I will start from the begininning...my guestbook at davesrealcountry.com has been getting a ton of spam, which is totally unacceptable, as this is a personal website. I was able to last week go in and delete unwanted entries. Well, a couple days ago I got another SPAM entry and was unable to login to adminstrative to delete it. So, I went to CPanel and upgraded to 2.33 (not the newest,as it is not available there). Then I go to login and I get this error (also the same error when going to the guestbook, itself)

MySQL Error : Connection Error
Error Number: 1045 Access denied for user 'XXXX'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
Date : Sun, September 18, 2005 13:41:57
IP : 64.136.49.229
Browser : Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 9
Referer : http://donkey.unixbsd.info:2086/scripts2/getthemes?modules=1
PHP Version : 4.4.0
OS : Linux
Server : Apache/1.3.33 (Unix) mod_fastcgi/2.4.2 mod_jk/1.2.8 mod_auth_passthrough/1.8 mod_log_bytes/1.2 mod_bwlimited/1.4 PHP/4.4.0 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_ssl/2.8.22 OpenSSL/0.9.7a
Server Name : www.davesrealcountry.com

So, in the meantime I have been messing around, knowing absolutely NOTHING about anything. I did read a post on how to back up the database and I did that...but, I have no idea how to fix this error. I am so upset, for fear I lost everything. Now, you are going to have to give me explicit directions here because I don't know much. I do now how to get to PHPAdministration and how to access the files involved, but nothing beyond that.

Can someone PLEASE help me??!!?

Thanks so much!

Error Number: 1045 Access denied for user 'XXXX'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

this error means NO SUCH DATABASE WITH THESE LOGINS.
you should config your config.php file and to open a database with entry of config.php

Basically some of the information you provided in admin/config.inc.php is incorrect.

What upsets me is I never touched anything in there...I will go check it out and see. I am really not too familiar with scripts.

It is possible that your hosts updated their version of MySQL. Download www.carbonize.co.uk/reset.zip to reset the password and username to their defaults.

Hmm a long shot is that they moved the MySQL database. May be worth speaking to your hosts about it. Personally I'd just say that cPanel messed up the database information in config.inc.php when you updated (cPanel seems to cause more problems than it fixes).

Well....those xxx's in there I put in myself, but I guess that was stupid because when you go to the main site and click on guestbook you see it. I was just covering myself. I'll have to look into this tomorrow and will contact the owner of the server...they did tell me they were hacked into...you think this has something to do with it?

Looks like you are missing some files. Might be worth you redownloading the guestbook from here then replacing all your files EXCEPT admin/config.inc.php

yikes, will I then lose all my guestbook entries along with it? I do have them on back up. Don't know how to upload them correctly, though.

I guess I am on my own from here on out. I have no idea what I am doing...lol.

But, thanks and I might just be back here again in a few days

The entries and settings are stored in a database and are not amongst the files.

I got it all back..that was easy. Now, I can't get into administration and I did reset the code. I'll figure it out, I hope.

Thanks so much for your help, I appreciate it
