My guestbook became slow after I had a surge in comment on my site. I tried to isolate this problem to ensure its from the comments. I deleted all my comments and the guestbook became very fast.

After i put back the deleted comments, now it has slowed down again.
Is there a fix for this? I have search all this forum and I can't find a solution.

basically, large number of comments slows down the guestbook! how do i fix this

My thinks are the same as Carbonize in that you are talking about the comments added to the guestbook entries, as opposed to the actual number of guestbook entries (posts) - how many guestbook entries do you have per page? (Maximum Records Displayed Per Page ) is it more than 20?

Yes, the problem is from the comments (replys to guestbook posts).
I noticed when you have lots of comments it slows the guestbook down.
When i purged the comments, the guestbook became fast. When i added the comments back again, it slowed down.

I did have 20 per page and now i changed to 10. still having the same problem

Oh - okay - that is probably something that should be looked into. How many comments do you have and at what point (number) did you notice that it was slogging everything down? Carbonize has been working on a rewrite of the script.

Yes I'm already looking into the particular MySQL call used to fetch the entries. It fetches the entries, pics and comments at the same time and e think this is where the problem lies. I will either rewrite it or get Freddy to as he knows MySQL better than me.

I have 1200 guestbook entries and about 3500 comments.
I noticed it slowing down after about 3000 comments or so.

Thanks all for trying to help. Meanwhile excellent guestbook program. And Carbonize, please check your mail. I sent some more info
Thanks

Freddy thinks it is down to the join command used when retreiving entries. We are looking at ways of redoing it that are faster but don't use to many SQL queries and it's not easy. The guestbook wasn't meant to have that many comments per post. Should turn off comments and make them use your forum really. Hopefully we will eventually have a fix.

No but I have pretty much finished the Lazarus Guestbook now so I may take a look at an idea I just had.

As I said above though the guestbook was made to have one or two comments per post at most. If you want loads of replies to posts you really should use a forum such as phpBB or Phorum.
