You can stick with 2.2 as I have made the anti spam mods work for it as well as 2.3.x

Alteration to 4 files, alteration to database as well. I have actually coded it in to Lazarus which is my off shoot of the Advanced Guestbook.

It can be done with a complex modification to Advanced Guestbook.

Possible or posibly your hosts updated their MySQL version which creates a problem. Use www.carbonize.co.uk/reset.zip to restore the default username and password.

fclose has been banned but not fopen :-/ really stupid security that one. I came across this problem with the guestbook on some servers and the fix is easy. I'm about to hit the sack after a 12 hour night shift so will look at the code later. So long as it's only the template stuff I should be able to replace the fopen, fread, fclose bit with just file_get_contents

The database for 2.3.2 is identical to 2.3.1 so the uograde script will work just the same. As stated you will lose any uploaded images though.

And you need to open email.php and add border="0" to the image tag.
