Probably because AOL junk is notorious for blocking alot of host's webmail accounts. I have the same problem with my webmail if I want to email a friend who has AOL crap I have to use my ISP email.

Has your webhost updated there version of php?

You need to do all your editing via and ftp program. Setting permissions so that you can access those files via your admin is just asking for trouble if you are ever hacked.
